Self Portrait
This project was more or less an exploration into realism and self portraits in general. It started off as what seemed like a very tedious task, which it was but in the end it gave me a lot of experience with painting being this was one of my first huge tasks in painting. (4 ft x 4 ft canvas)
Crystal
A project done in the beginning of junior year, "crystal" was done by replicating the most minute of details within a close up of two crystals. It's meaning and image ends up being abstract. But what can be drawn is a feeling of emotion, something like the two extremes of emotion. The stronger warmer colors representing any range of emotions from anger to happiness on a larger and more exaggerated scale, while the cooler colors could easily represent something like sadness or fear. The interpretation is really up to the viewer, due to its abstract nature.
Monoprint
This piece is a representation of what little opinion i did have on government back then and how its grasp is one of constriction. While my views have shifted, the original meaning was simply that government has two goals in mind and those are revenue and control. (symbolized by the hand grasping the pyramid with the eye) The flipping of the image was to show its negativity. The main point being big corporations and government had very singular views, and didn't focus much on the people.
Choice Piece
The choice piece as seen above is a large drawing i did toward the end of junior year where i worked on a sheet of paper and depicted a scene of a youth rejecting institution. At this point in time i felt a lot of the things we did in school and in life were trivial and this was my way of putting my emotions on paper. The youth is shown in non-formal dress and caries a sword and tosses a book to his side, while the shadowed man in the back idly stands by. The over all meaning is that the younger man is done with uniform and ordained principals and instead embarks on a path of uncertainty and danger.
Artist, Artist in the City
(Diptych)
"Artist,City in the Artist" shows that an artist, classically, is viewed as someone who is educated uniform and perhaps a little skewed in one way or another, although the second part of this painting shows that the city in the end defines the artist. The environment and era they live in dictate them as a person and as an artist. The way we live, where, and when creates the character of an artist.
The clay tile seen above was a loose interpretation of the "Eye of Sauron" from the book The Lord of The Rings. The eye itself was a watchtower essentially in which everything was seen in its line of sight. However i felt like this related to modern day society in that ones negative deeds makes them stand out as though eyes are always watching them. Personally the piece has little connection but perhaps the past is something everyone tries to hide from but always stays with them.
Painting Based off of Photography
This painting based of photography was taken in a way more expressionistic manner where in I did the general shape of the photo but i added texture and color to it. By and large the piece has no direct meaning it just shows an abstract view of color and motion.
Found Object
The "Found Object" piece was something i created during the end of my junior year where i had no goal in mind but one developed in the end. The whole piece was created through miscellaneous items or found objects. (Brick, Router, Pvc, Nails Etc) The Eventual meaning i figured in the end was that emotion was a basic but essential thing. It is fundamental in nature, and it can be as complex or as simple as one makes it out to be.
Sacred Vessel
The "Sacred Vessel" is a project that was supposed to make a statement on something that is very near and dear to us. One obvious thing that effects both me and a lot of other people is technology. This piece depicts a head engraved with all sorts of unnatural and man made looking structures and forms. Added also are wires, a light bulb, and other assorted technological bits. The overall message is that the modern day human is a slave to technology, everything we sense is somehow related to technology. Our mind and our thoughts all plagued by technology. Although the piece itself shows a negative
view on technology it doesn't necessarily
reflect my personal views on technology.
